Sector E - Boschetto irregolare

mappa settore E

One of this cemetery’s peculiarities consists in the integration between two different ideas and typologies of cemetery: this geometrical architectural ensemble, a rationalized place of public memory, which has been built in a illuminist and neoclassical style, coexists with a romantic landscape, which is more typical of the North European culture, which presents some places dedicated to the meditation about death, in a direct comparison with nature.

Behind the Pantheon there is a walkable area with some sinuous avenues, which follow the hill trend. In the zone known as “Boschetto Irregolare” or “Boschetto dei Mille”, there are also some vast spaces, like the so-called “Valletta Pontasso”, which is crowned by some cypresses; in the vicinity of the cemetery’s border, the “Campo dei Mille” holds many tombs of the participants to the battles for the unification of Italy.

Monuments, which are swathed in a greenery made by timber trees, follow one another in a very suggestive zone of a great evocative charm. Many of them are dedicated to some personalities of the history of the unification of Italy, among which there are also Giuseppe Garibaldi and Michele Novaro, the latter being the author of Italy’s national anthem. In this zone there are also some chapels, which have been built in a range of sizes and according to different styles, among which there is Raffaele Rubattino’s one.
